Early in the story Esther demonstrates that she is compliant. Even though she is now the queen, she obeys Mordecai (Esth 2:20; see also 2:10). It was Esther’s obedience that got her selected as queen in the first place. She is thus portrayed in stark contrast to the former queen, Vashti. But Esther’s most significant contribution at this point in the storyline is her position in the palace.
